Norway Boys Rally For Walk-Off Win In Escanaba
ESCANABA---The Norway Major Little League All-Stars (age 10-12) opened district tournament play with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Escanaba Sunday evening at Escanaba's Karl Dickson Field. Norway was down to its final strike twice in the final inning before getting a pair of clutch hits to bring in three runs, and taking te lead for the only time in the game. Norway countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before Escanaba took a 5-3 lead when Martinson doubled and scored on a base hit by Robitaille. But in the sixth inning, Escanaba had its chances to hang on but committed two errors: one at first base, and one in left field, and with Remington Buchanan, the bases were loaded. With two out, Tucker Buchanan smacked a single up the middle to bring home one run, and with two strikes on him, Colton Lord bounced a two-run single to left field, bringing home the tying and winning runs. Lord started the game on the mound for Norway, throwing 67 pitches and allowing all five runs, giving way to DeBakker. He threw 34 pitches and ended up with the pitching win. Martinson started for Escanaba, and made it until the fourth inning before leaving, having thrown 64 pitches. Robitaille came in to throw his 20 pitches and get through that three-run Norway inning, and then Irving took the loss, giving up the game-winning runs. Norway gets a bye into the next round of the district tournament. Escanaba plays in the loser's bracket on Monday against Iron Mountain North, which lost to Kingsford Sunday night, 10-1. Kingsford and Gladstone will play in the second game on Monday. Both will be broadcast on WCHT-FM/AM (93.5/600) in Delta County, and on WMIQ-AM (1450) in Iron Mountain, and on www.rrnsports.com. Coverage begins around 4:15 ET/3:15 CT from Karl Dickson Field. |
