Escanaba Senior Girls Top Norway For District Title
![]() ESCANABA---Sam Connor had a home run, double and single, and she pitched three innings in relief to earn the victory as the Escanaba Senior Girls (age 15-16) beat Norway, 11-7, in Wednesday night's district championship game. ![]() Norway took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Courtnee Marquaret clubbed a two-run home run off of Escanaba starter Katie Ross. But Ross got her revenge when she got a two-run single in the third inning to put the game into a 2-2 tie. Norway gained a 4-2 lead in the third inning on an error and a wild pitch. But Escanaba rallied quickly, getting a solo home run from Connor. Later, Emily Bruntjens got a two-run base hit, and Kayla VanPortfliet and Taylor Segorski also got run-scoring base hits. Callie Heller, who made several defensive plays at shortstop, had an RBI single of her own as the Escanaba girls turned a 4-2 deficit into an 11-5 lead. Connor got the pitching win in relief of Ross. Harlie Caster took the loss for Norway. Britta Grayvold and Lindsey Debernardi both had two hits for Norway. Segorski and Ross each had two hits for Escanaba, along with Connor's three base hits. Escanaba faces Keweenaw in the sectionals at 2:00 and 4:00 on Saturday.
