Escanaba Girls Win Little League District Opener
![]() GLADSTONE---The Little League All-Star season got under way Friday as the Escanaba and Gladstone Major Girls (age 11-12) met in a district tournament game in Gladstone. Escanba's Gabby Salo outdueled Gladstone's Brittany Schwartz, and Escanaba posted a 5-1 win. Salo pitched the whole game, allowing just three base hits and striking out eleven batters over six innings. Schwartz allowed seven hits, and she fanned ten batters. ![]() Gladstone got its run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Sydney Herioux. Escanaba got that run back in the top of the fifth when Salo tripled to the right field fence. The game's final run scored in the sixth on a Jalin Olson double. That was plenty for Salo, who closed the game on a roll: she struck out the final seven girls she faced. Escanaba plays at 12:00 Saturday against Iron Mountain North in Gladstone. Gladstone drops to the loser's bracket, and will play at 2:00 Sunday against the loser of Saturday's Norway-Kingsford game.
