Malmstead's Big Game Sends Gladstone Into Finals
![]() GLADSTONE---Justin Malmstead had a single, triple, and home run, as the Gladstone Major Little League All-Stars (age 11-12) topped Munising, 10-0, in district tournament action on Tuesday. Zach Hanson added two doubles and an RBI and Munising was held to one base hit in the game. Gladstone advanced to this weekend's district finals. ![]() In this game, Hanson led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and rode home on Malmstead's home run. Gladstone added to its 2-0 lead with four more runs in the second inning. With two out, Peyton Fedell was safe on an error. That allowed the top of the order to get to the plate, and Hanson smacked his second double of the game, scoring a run to make it 3-0. Caden Alworden put down a nice bunt (wth two outs) to get on base and bring home another run, and then Ian Schwalbach's two-run single made it a 6-0 game. In the fourth inning, Malmstead led off with his third hit, this time, a triple. Schwalbach followed with an RBI single, then Cole Hansen canme through with an RBI hit. The game's final run came in on a wild pitch after John Falcon put down a sacrafice bunt. ![]() Gladstone did not allow its pitchers to throw beyond the 20-pitch thresshold, which allows all of them to stay elibible to pitch during Friday night's district finals. Malmstead, Hanson, and Schwalbach combined to pitch a four-inning one-hitter. Munising's Josh Houtari threw three innings, allowing nine runs on ten hits.
