LATE-NIGHT WINNER: Esky Girls Top Canadians
ROXANA, Del.----The Escanaba Big League Girls (age 16-18) won their second straight World Series game early Wednesday morning, beating the Canadian champions from Windsor, Ontario, 15-0. The game started at 11:35 p.m. Monday after a day of heavy rains in Delaware, and it ended just before a 1 a.m. curfew was going to take effect Tuesday morning. The Escanaba girls scored ten runs in the first inning and then added five more in the second inning. The final two innings were played with the Escanaba girls intentionally making outs by either leaving a base early, or by allowing themselves to be tagged out between bases. Becca Piron had a two-run homer and an RBI triple to lead the offense. Ross helped her own cause with an RBI triple and a pair of singles. Taylor Segorski also had an RBI triple, and Taylor LaFave got her first base hit of the tournament run. Center fielder Emily Bruntjens sat out the game to rest her leg, which was injured in last week's Central Regional tournament. Even without her at the top of the order, Escanaba had 12 base hits in the victory. Escanaba improved to 2-0 in the tournament. The girls will face the Southeast champions from Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday. Game time is 12:30. The broadcast starts at 12:00 noon on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
