Delta County Sr. Girls Win Twice At State Tourney
ESCANABA----The Delta County Senior Little League All-Stars (age 15-16) dodged the raindrops and two opponents at the state tournament Friday in Escanaba. Delta County topped Keweenaw, 3-2, and Taylor, 11-4, at Lemmerand Park. The Escanaba and Gladstone girls advance to Saturday's state championship game at noon. Once the game began, though, it moved along quickly because Gladstone pitcher Amber Lenards and Calumet pitcher Emily Erkkila pitched well, and efficiently. Also, Delta County had trouble cashing in on scoring opportunities, as three girls were thrown out on the basepaths, inlcuding one at home plate. Keweenaw took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Erkkila doubled home two runs. The Delta County girls got that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Maddie Griffin singled home Lexi Chaillier. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Delta County tied the game on an RBI double by Savannah Barron (driving home Richelle Vandeville). In the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Capodilupo led off with a base hit. With two out, and an 0-2 count on here, Kaitlyn Hardwick hit a pop fly into right field that landed for the game-winning, walk-off, RBI single. The Delta County girls were back on the field a couple of hours later, and did not need a big comeback in the game against Taylor from suburban Detroit, jumping off to a 4-0 lead and cruising from there. A highlight came late in the game, when Chaillier hit a two-run homer over the outfield fence. Lenards pitched all seven innings for the win. Delta County plays East Jordan at 10:00 Saturday morning in a game that means nothing in the standings. At the same time, Keweenaw and Taylor will square off. The winner of that game will face Delta County in the state championship game. The title game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and rrnsports.com at noon.
