Delta County Senior Girls Finish Regional Run 0-3

SOUTH BEND, Ind.---The Delta County Senior Girls (age 15-16) finished Central Regional Tournament play on Saturday with a pair of losses, and will return home with an 0-3 record at the event. The DC girls lost to South Bend, Ind., 7-2, and Beardstown, Ill., 12-2, on Saturday.

It was an early exit for the Escanaba/Gladstone/Rapid River girls, but not before the girls made a little noise early in their game against the host team.

DELTA COUNTY vs SOUTH BEND, INDIANA---

Delta County off to a fast start in bottom of first inning against Indiana District Eleven as the first four batters had base hits. Maddie Kolich tripled to right, and then Kaitlyn Hardwick laid down a perfect bunt. With first baseman and pitcher charging she bunted between them, hard enough to get it past both girls. The second baseman ended up fielding it with Kolich scoring.

Richelle Vandeville singled to center and Lexi Chaillier doubled to right center, scoring Hardwick. Indiana pitcher Jordyn Bloode got out of the second-and-third, no-out jam. striking out Maddy Griffin looking, getting Chloe Caswell to pop up a bunt, and striking out Heather Bergstrom. Delta County led, 2-0, but Bloode was pretty much untouchable after that.

She retired eight in a row before Chaillier clubbed her second double of the game with two out in the 3rd inning. She then retired eleven in a row before Bergstrom singled with 1 out in the 7th. Bloode went all seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs, walking none and fanning 12.

South Bend got a run in the second inning as Kenna Young singled and stole second. On a ground out to third, she moved to third and came home on an error. They tied it in the 3rd without a hit. With one out, Griffin hit a batter. After the second out, Griffin walked three straight hitters to force in the tying run. Amber Lenards came out of the dugout to relieve Griffin. A couple innings later Griffin was removed from the game with heat exhaustion.

Taylor Kowalski hit a two-out home run to center in the fifth inning to put Indiana up, 3-2. They sealed the game with a 4-run 6th, featuring a run scoring ground rule double by Bloode in which Serina Sinnaeve ran through the fence an eyelash after the ball hit the fence.

Griffin went 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and two runs (one earned). She walked three and hit a batter and struck out one. Lenards took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, surrendering five hits and five runs. She walked five (four of those in the sixth innings) and struck out six.

DELTA COUNTY vs BEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS---

A couple of hours later, the Delta County girls faced the Beardstown, Illinois, team that had knocked off the host team on the tournament's opening day. And again, the DC girls got off to a good start. DC took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Bergstrom had a one-out double, Olivia Capadilupo and Sinnaeve followed with walks and Kolich followed with a 2-run double.

They still  had runners at second and third with one out but, on a ground ball to short, Sinnaeve got hung up between third and home and the first baseman's throw to the plate was in plenty of time to complete the double play.

Illinois then came up with four singles in the second inning to score three runs. An RBI single by Racquel Rawlins and a two-out, two-run single by Daytona Dooley put Beardstown in front, 4-2. Three more runs came in the third inning, with the final two coring on a home run by Alyssa Dour.  Illinois banged out 14 hits in the game. Alissa Hodge pitched all five innings, allowing five hits and two runs, walking three and striking out five.

Griffin worked the first three innings for DC, allowing seven hits and runs, hitting a batter and striking out two. Lenards pitched two innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (two earned), walking one and striking out two.

The other DC hits were singles by Vandeville in the third and fifth innings, and a single by Griffin in the third inning.
