Portage Lake Jr. Girls Get Split At State Tournament
JENISON, Mich.----The Portage Lake Junior Girls (age 13-14) won one and lost one at the Junior Softball State Tournament on Thursday in downstate Jenison. The Copper Country girls lost to Tecumseh, 14-3, before rebounding to beat Boyne City, 17-7. The game with Tecumseh was more competitive than the final score indicates, as it was tied at 2-2 before the defense fell apart and Tecumseh's Madison Cytlak hit a pair of home runs. As winds howled at about 30 miles per hour, Portage Lake and Boyne Cioty played a marathon game that the Copper Country girls finally put away in the sixth inning with six runs. Josie Connors was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Cassidy Becia was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Delaney Heinonen pitched all six innings, striking out seven batters along the way. Portage Lake faces Delta County in an all-U.P. battle Friday afternoon at 3:00. Click the above headline to see photos and videos from Thursday's games. |
