STATE CHAMPIONS! Delta County Sr Girls On Top
ESCANABA---For the third time in five years, the state champions in Senior Little League Softball are from Delta County. The girls from Escanaba, Gladstone, and Rapid River captured the state championship on Saturday, beating Keweenaw, 11-1, in Escanaba. Delta County started the day with an easy 20-0 win over East Jordan to finish the round robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. Keweenaw, meanwhile, battled back from a 7-2 deficit to eliminate Taylor, 9-7, in Saturday's other early game. Delta County was bracing for another battle from the Copper Country team, which the DC girls had to rally to beat, 3-2, on Friday. But this time, it was a different story. Delta County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Heather Bergstrom tripled and scored on a bunt single by Maddy Griffin. The big blow came in the second inning when Lexi Chaillier launched a three-run homer to center field to make it a 4-0 game. Savannah Barron and Griffin would add RBI hits during a seven-run fifth inning that turned a 4-1 contest into an 11-1 rout. And that was more than enough for pitcher Amber Lenards, who threw all five innings to win her fourth game in 24 hours. Delta County will play in the Central Regional Tournament in South Bend, with their first game set for Friday, July 22. It is a three-day tournament, with the winner advaning t0 the Senior Softball World Series in Delaware.
