Four UP Teams Wrap Up Play At Trenton Showcase

TRENTON, Mich.---Four Upper Peninsula high school hockey teams competed in the MIHL Hockey Showcase in downstate Trenton this weekend.

The tournament included a mix of private and public schools from across the state, and included three teams from the Copper Country and the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils.

A recap of how the U.P. teams did follows.

SAULT HIGH WINS TWO---The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils won their second straight game on Saturday, beating Grand Rapids Christian, 4-0. Bobby Price (pictured above) and Tyler Feltis both had a goal and an assist in the Blue Devil win. Brenden Krause and Andrew Farlow also scored for the Sault. Ryan Sanderson stopped 16 shots.

On Friday, the Blue Devils beat Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern, 5-4, in a shootout. Nate Jeffreys scored the decisive goal in the shootout for the Sault while Sanderson stopped two of three shots. Sanderson made 32 saves in the game itself as the Blue Devils were outshot, 36-19, in regulation and overtime periods.

CALUMET SPLITS SHOOTOUTS--The Calumet Copper Kings earned an impressive 4-3 win over the Romeo Bulldogs in a shootout on Saturday. Rory Anderson and Brent Loukus both scored in the shootout for Calumet and goaltender Nick Voelker stopped both shots he faced. Ed Beiring, Daylen Anderson, and Sam Erkkila scored in regulation.

On Friday, Calumet also played in a shootout, losing to Northville, 4-3. Both Northville shooters scored in the shootout, while Anderson and Loukus both missed. Loukus, Beiring, and Josh VanDenburg all scored in regulation for the Copper Kings.

HANCOCK LOSES TWICE---The defending state champion Hancock Bulldogs faced two tough Detroit-area teams during the Showcase. On Saturday, the Bulldogs lost to Birmingham Brother Rice, 6-3. Teddy Randell, Alex Nordstrom, and Colton Salani scored for the Bulldogs. Hancock led, 3-2, after two periods of play before Brother Rice scored four goals in the third period, including an empty-netter with 1:48 to play.

On Friday, Hancock lost to Livonia Stevenson, 3-2. Tyler Turcotte and Bryan Lepisto scored the Bulldog goals, and goaltender Dawson Kero made 28 saves. The Bulldogs wete outshot, 31-13, in the game, but Kero kept his team close all morning long.

HOUGHTON GETS SPLIT---The Houghton Gremlins lost to Northville, 4-1, on Saturday, after posting an impressive win over Warren DelaSalle on Friday. In Saturday's game, Ronald Olson scored the only goal for the Gremlins.

On Friday, Jacob Kruse had two goals and an assist as the Gremlins beat DelaSalle, 5-1. Seth Francis and Olson also scored, and goalie Will Stier made 23 saves.
