DOWN TO THE WIRE AGAIN: Redmen Prevail, 2-1
WELLS---The Escanaba Eskymos and Marquette Redmen played another down-to-the-wire hockey game Tuesday night, with Marquette pulling this one out, 2-1, at the Hannahville Ice & Turf. The Eskymos beat the Redmen, 1-0, earlier this season. Marquette sophomore Elliot Samppala fired one under the cross bar with 4:35 left in the game to break a 1-1 tie, sending the Redmen to their tenth win of the season. Escanaba got caught in an awful line change, allowing three Marquette players to rush in on goaltender Brodie Goddard. Colin Gafney cashed in, scoring the game's first goal. In the third period, Escanaba captain Chris LeMire had scored off of a Parker LaMarch face-off win to tie the game at 1-1, with 6:32 left in the third period. And the Eskymos had a 2-on-1 rush moments later, but goaltender Tyler Bergwall made the stop. And less than two minutes later, Marquette grabbed the lead on Samppala's goal. The Eskymos pulled Goddard for an extra attacker with 1:32 left in the game, but could not score the equalizer. Marquette ended up outshooting Escanaba, 31-27. Marquette improved to 10-4-1 on the season, while Escanbaa fell to 8-8-0. The two teams will meet again in the first round of the state playoffs Feb. 28 in Marquette. In Tuesday night's junior varisty game, Escanaba took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Aaron Young, but the JV Redmen rallied and posted a 4-3 victory.
