Eskymos End Homestand With 5-3 Loss To Flivvers
WELLS---The Escanaba High School hockey team lost its third straight home game on Tuesday, falling to the Kingsford Flivvers, 5-3, at the Hannahville Ice & Turf. Garth Wickham's goal late in the first period tied the game for Escanaba at 1-1, but the Flivvers got a power play goal from Ben Johnson in the second period and then scored two quick goals early in the third period to effectively salt the game away. Kingsford scored the first goal of the game on a Trent Juul shot at the 8:48 mark before Wickham's top-shelf goal tied it. In the second period, the Eskymos were called for too many men on the ice, and they killed off 1:51 of the two-minute penalty. But Johnson had a screen in front of Escanaba goaltdender Brodie Goddard, and made it 2-1. The back-breakers for Escanaba came early in the third period when the Flivvers scored twice on bad-angle shots by Joe Murvich and Eamonn Weed. That made it 4-1. Escanaba got back to within 4-2 when Gavin Schwalbach scored on the 4-on-4 with 6:46 left in the game. And then, a shot went off a Kingsford player and past Flivver goaltender Trevor Anderson with 4:38 on the clock. Kingsford called time out. "We were thinking more offensively than defensively," Hughes said of that play. "Paul Carne tried jumping the play. He had it on his stick, and it just bounced over, creating the odd-man rush, which they scored on. That could be a good play, and it could be a bad one. Unfortunately, it was a bad one for us." Kingsford outshot Escanaba, 31-25. It was the Flivvers' season-opener. Escanaba, meanwhile, fell to 0-3, heading into the Thanksgiving break. The Eskymos will play their first road game next Tuesday night, the 29th, in Marquette.
