Escanaba Wins, Marquette Falls In Showcase Finale
CHELSEA, Mich.---The Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase is in the books for another year. The 52-team event wrapped up Saturday with a dozen games, including two involving Upper Peninsula teams. The Marquette Redmen lost to East Grand Rapids, 4-2, before Escanaba edged Woodhaven-Brownstown, 3-2, at the Arctic Coliseum. EAST GRAND RAPIDS 4, MARQUETTE 2---In the first game, Marquette tied the game twice before the Pioneers scored late in the second period and again early in the third period. The Redmen trailwd 1-0 entering the second period before they got goals from Rory O'Connor and Hunter Doucette to tie the game at 2-2. But East Grand Rapids got the go-ahead goal from Mike Malewitz with just 30 seconds left in the second period, and the Redmen had penalty problems in the third. Dylan Sibilsky took the loss in net for Marquette. ESCANABA 3, WOODHAVEN 2---In the second game, Escanaba took the lead for the second straight day as Colton Hayes jammed one home from along the near post. It stayed 1-0 until early in the third period until the Warriors took advantage of what Eskymo Coach Matt Hughes called a "mental lapse". Christer Carne knocked in a rebound midway through the third period to make it 3-1, and that goal turned out to be huge because Woodhaven defenseman Mike Faremouth went to his backhand, making it a 3-2 game. The Eskynos held on from there. Brodie Goddard started in net for the third straight game, and posted the win. Carne had a goal and an assist, Grant Wickham had two assists, and Parker LaMarch added an assist. Escanaba travels to Negaunee Tuesday night at 7:00.
