BOUNCING BACK: Eskymos Trip Detroit Jesuit, 5-1
WELLS---The best way to forget about a disappointing loss is to win the next game. And the Escanaba High School hockey team didn't have long to wait after dropping a 3-2 game to Bay City Central Saturday in Traverse City. In a rare Sunday afternoon game, the Eskymos beat the University of Detroit Jesuit Cubs, 5-1, at the Wells Sports Complex. In their first home game in nearly a month, the Eskymos had four different goal scorers to win their first-ever meeting with the U of D team. The Cubs left the Upper Peninsula empty-handed, after dropping games Friday (7-2) and Saturday (2-1) in Calumet. Christer Carne scored a pretty goal late in the second period, going to his backhand and scoring, top-shelf, to make it a 4-1 game. Garth Wickham scored an empty-net goal late in the third period to close the scoring. Maxim Denomme scored the only goal for the Cubs, who have lost eight straight games. Escanaba goaltender Brodie Goddard made 26 saves to earn the victory. Jesuit goaltender Patrick DiRita took the loss, giving up three goals on six shots. Grant Gardella played the final two periods, stopping 18 of 19 shots. In Sunday's junior varsity game, U of D topped Escanaba, 5-2. Noah Olsen and Aaron Young scored for the JV Eskymos, and Trevor Denome stopped 32 shots in the loss. Escanaba (8-7-0) will host Marquette Tuesday night. The JV game starts at 5:00, and the varsity game faces off at 7:30. The varsity game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
