Hall Pitches Escanaba Cubs Past Menominee, 9-2
ESCANABA---Sam Hall pitched five strong innings and the Escanaba Cubs beat the Menominee Red Wave, 9-2, Saturday at Al Ness Field. The Cubs scored seven runs early in the game and cruised from there, winning their second game in less than 24 hours. This time, for the most part, Hall had better defense behind him. "I just tried to keep the ball low and get ground balls, which is what I did," Hall said. "I felt good. The first couple of innings kind of flew by." Hall threw five innings, allowing three hits and one walk. Both runs against him were unearned. Justin Popelka threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Cubs. Escanaba scored two runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded single by Logan Lamb. Later, Hall helped his own cause with a pop fly single to right field that scored two runs. Menominee's Jason Janquart threw all seven innings and took the loss. Offensively, Janquart had two of Menominee's four base hits, including a double to the fence. Escanaba (5-7) won at home Saturday after whipping Gladstone, 14-0, Friday night in Gladstone. The Cubs had nine base hits, after getting 16 hits in Friday's game. In other American Legion games on Saturday, Marquette swept Copper Country, 6-5 (in nine innings) and 11-1; and Kingsford shut out Ishpeming, 5-0, at LoDal Park. Escanaba hosts Kingsford in a doubleheader Tuesday night, with game time set for 6:00. The games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and steaming on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
