Danhoff Outduels Punzel In Delta County Battle
ESCANABA---The last time the Escanaba Cubs and Gladstone Indians met, it was an embarrassing loss for the Indians, on their home field. The Gladstone players did not forget that 14-0 loss, and the boys came to play Thursday night in a rematch in Escanaba. The Indians scored a pair of early runs and held on to beat the Cubs, 2-1. Elliot Danhoff threw six strong innings and A.J. Lundberg closed it out in the seventh inning. Brandon Punzel was a hard-luck loss for the Cubs, striking out twelve Gladstone batters but getting no run support. The game was played a day earlier than scheduled because Escanaba will host the Tier III Upper Peninsula championships for the smaller U.P. teams, starting on Friday. In the junior varsity game Thursday evening, the Escanaba Junior Cubs topped the Gladstone Junior Indians, 8-6.
