Cubs 2-0; Indians 1-1 At American Legion Tourney
ESCANABA---The American Legion Baseball season is under way in Delta County. Just days after the Escanaba and Gladstone High School seasons ended, the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament is running this Fathers' Day weekend with seven teams. It began on Thursday with the Escanaba Cubs beating the Gladstone Indians, 9-4. On Friday, the Cubs blew a 7-2 lead in the final inning to the Marquette Blues, but C.J. Barron had the walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to give Escanaba an 8-7 victory. Hunter LaMarch had two hits and Logan Lamb had two doubles. In Gladstone on Friday, 19-year-old Justin Jurek got his first win as the manager of the Indians, 6-3, over Green Bay. On Thursday, Escanaba's Justin Popelka pitched six strong innings, allowing seven hits but no walks. He struck out three batters. Gladstone's Clay Cole took the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Cole walked five and struck out one batter. Offensively, Logan Lamb had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for the Cubs. Bark River-Harris High Schooler Sam Hall also drove in three runs, with a single and a double. And Barron was on base four times with a single and three walks. For Gladstone, Tyson Seymour had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Hunter Botruff also had two hits and drove in one run for the Indians. Both Escanaba and Gladstone play twice on Saturday on their home fields.
