Cubs Season Ends With Loss To Hudson At States
ADRIAN, Mich.---The baseball season ended for the Escanaba Cubs on Saturday as they fell to Hudson, 4-1, at the Class A American Legion State Tournament at Siena Heights University in Adrian. The Cubs finished their season with a 15-17-1 overall record, and third in the state. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Sean Bissell and Tyler Skufca each drew walks. After Hunter LaMarch struck out, Logan Lamb bounced out...and on the play, a throwing error brought Bissell home. That gave pitcher Brandon Punzel an early cushion, but Hudson scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a hit by Dylan Roddy. In the third inning, the Cubs had a chance to tie the game when Bissell led off with a single, and with one out, he was at second base when LaMarch smoked one toward the outfield. It was caught, and Bissell was doubled off of second base. No run. Two outs, instead. In the fifth inning, the Cubs had another scoring chance when Tyler Willette singled with LaMarch on second base. LaMarch tried to score on the hit, but was thrown out at the plate. The inning continued when Bissell walked, but Skufca grounded out with two on to end the inning. In the end, the Cubs managed only two base hits against winning pitcher Gunnar Snyder, although he did walk five batters. Punzel took the loss, allowing eleven hits and four earned runs in six innings of work. Punzel struck out eight batters and walked four. Later on Saturday, Hudson won again, beating Menominee, 3-1. That sets up a winner-take-all state championship game on Sunday. |
