Blues Outscore Cubs In Wild Nine-Inning Contest
ESCANABA---The Escanaba Cubs and Kingsford Blues were both short on pitching Tuesday as they prepared to play a doubleheader at Al Ness Field. So, the coaches decided to play a single nine-inning game instead of a twinbill. While Ohman sent four boys to the mound, including rookie Gavin Peacock, Forstrom had high school All-Stater John Edwardsen take care of things for all nine innings. It worked for Forstrom as the Blues beat the Cubs, 16-10. Yep, 26 runs in nine innings of baseball. And actually, it was 25 runs in six innings of baseball, as the Cubs had a 1-0 lead after three innings on a Braden Olsen RBI single. Peacock was doing OK on the mound in his debut...until the fourth inning. That's when Kingsford's Andy Barker hit a grand slam home run to put the Blues ahead, 4-1. From there, it was a free-for-all as Kingsford went up by 8-1 and 13-2 scores. The Cubs cut it to 13-9 late in the game, before Barker ripped an RBI shot to the fence and Noah Voss brought in two more runs with a base hit, making it a 16-9 game. This game started to look a lot like the Cubs' loss to DePere from ten days before as Hunter LaMarch came in to pitch. Yep...his little brother, Parker, threw the eighth inning, but Ohman asked the older LaMarch...aka "Punk" to throw the ninth inning. Edwardsen may have been the most tired boy of all. The Norway High School All-Stater showed off a rubber left arm as he tossed all nine innings, and then got into his car for a three-hour drive to meet with college coaches. Kingsford travels back to Delta County for a game in Gladstone Thursday night. Escanaba is home on Thursday night against Bark River at 7:00.
