Bats Go Silent; Eskymo Season Ends In Regionals
 GLADWIN----The Escanaba High School baseball team managed only two base hits and gave up two unearned runs in a 2-0 loss to the Fremont Packers Saturday in the MHSAA Division Two Regional semifinals on Saturday at Wilmot Field in Gladwin. It was a heartbreaking loss for an Eskymo team that thought its offensive problems had turned around after a district championship win last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. Escanaba had no base hits off Fremont pitcher Nate Hoffman until Jack Valentine led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single. And that inning would turn out to be the Eskymos' biggest chance at scoring, when Logan Lamb followed Valentine's hit with a single of his own. Freshman Craig Kamin had a lengthy at-bat that turned into a walk.  The Packers (15-23) scored the game's only runs in the top of the second inning against Punzel. Two walks, a bloop single by James Pekel, and throwing error at third base on a bunt plated one run. A wild pitch off the tip of Barron's glove scored the other. Punzel pitched five innings and took the loss. Justin Popelka threw two innings in relief, allowing two base hits but returing the final six batters he faced. Escanaba finishes its season with a 20-10-1 record. The Eskymos graduate four seniors: Hunter LaMarch, Brandon Punzel, Jack Valentine, and Logan Lamb.
