Barron Shutout Helps Eskymos Tame Broncos, 7-0

ESCANABA---C.J. Barron scattered three base hits over seven innings to lead the Escanaba Eskymos to a 7-0 win over the Bark River-Harris Broncos Friday afternoon.

Barron overcame a few defensive mistakes in the early innings and was helped along by three double plays to post the complete-game shutout.

"I felt great," Barron said. "My curves were working. They weren't swinging at too many of them, so I had to get them over for strikes."

Escanaba's first four runs were unearned, and Broncos pitcher Sam Hall probably deserved a better fate. Not only did the Broncos commit four errors, but there were also several ground balls that went for Escanaba infield hits instead of outs on the infield.

Hunter LaMarch's groundout scored the first run in the opening inning, then in the third inning, Johnny Schlenvogt's two-run single made it 4-0 (the third run scored on a wild pitch).

In the fourth inning, Hall's pitch count started to rise and the Eskymos hit the ball had, scoring three runs on four base hits.

LaMarch's two-run single was the biggest hit of that fourth inning.

The Broncos had the leadoff man on in each of the first two innings, but the Eskymos made the defensive plays they needed. On one play, a grounder on the infield went toward Barron, who got a piece of it and flipped it to third baseman Logan Lamb for the out. Catcher Parker LaMarch threw out a man trying to steal second, and the middle infield of Hunter LaMarch and Justin Popelka ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play.

But the Eskymos also had moments of sloppiness, with three errors on defense and a couple of baserunning mistakes that cost them at least two runs.

"That's the stuff that we've got to clean up," Eskymo Manager Kirk Schwalbach said. "We mde a couple of errors and we haven't done that lately. But good pitching seems to supersede all of that and C.J. pitched another good game. Everyone that's gotten on the mound so far this year has pitched pretty well for us."

Brandon Punzel had three hits and Parker LaMarch added two singles for the Eskymos. On the mound, Barron did not walk a batter in his seven innings, striking out five.

For BR-H, Hall pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, and was charged with seven runs (three earned) on ten hits. Mason Korhonen and Matt Richer threw in relief. Clean-up hitter Drake Draze had two hits and catcher Logan Heim had the other for the Broncos.

Escanaba (7-5) has won all four games on this homestand. The Eskymos will welcome the Gladstone Braves to Al Ness Field on Tuesday. Game time is set for 5:00. It will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
