Gladstone Tops Bark River To Win Soo Tournament
![]() SAULT STE. MARIE---The Gladstone Indians and Bark River Bucs represented Delta County well at the Sault Ste. Marie American Legion Baseball Tournament this weekend. The two local teams both advanced to the championship game before Gladstone won the trophy on the mercy rule, 13-0, at James Field. This happened after Bark River upset the EUP Travelers Class AA team, 4-3, in the first semifinal, before Gladstone held on to beat Marquette, 3-2, in the other semi. The Bucs won when Duner Englund ripped a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, and then retired the Travelers in the bottom of the inning. Then the Indians grabbed a 3-0 lead as Marquette made several errors and had a hard time hitting Gladstone pitcher Ben Kelly. Kelly had beat Marquette, 1-0, two weeks ago at the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament in Gladstone, and he had another shutout going until the Blues managed to score twice in the sixth inning. In the championship game, Bark River simply ran out of pitching. Nick Javurek got the ball and the Indians pounded him for seven early runs. Matt Richer came in for a bit, but he couldn't get outs, so Javurek came back in to pitch. Adam Cappaert even got some mound time for the Bucs. Tyson Seymour and Jared Crow each had triples for Gladstone, and Crow earned the pitching victory. The Indians improve to 15-4 on the season. Bark River is 9-6. The two teams will play each other again this Tuesday, in Bark River. Game time is 5:00. It will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600) and rrnsports.com.
