Indians Take Advantage Of Cub Mistakes In Opener
![]() ESCANABA---The Gladstone Indians took advantage of four errors, nine walks, and six hit-battsmen and cruised to an 8-0 win over the Escanaba Cubs in their season-opener Thursday night at the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament at Al Ness Field. Gladstone had just one RBI base hit in the contest: a two-run double over the first base bag by Dan Martin with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. ![]() Cooper Cavadeas and Zach Hanson combined to pitch the shutout, limiting Escanaba to just two base hits: singles by Tyler Lawson and Zeke Strand. Cavadeas tossed the first five innings, allowing one hit and two walks. Hanson threw the final two innings. Gladstone managed five base hits in the game, two of them by catcher Braeden Lamberg getting two of them. Cody Frappier was hit by a pitch three times and walked twice. Martin, Tyson Seymour and Ben Kelly also had base hits for the Indians. Escanaba used three pitchers in the loss. Noah Lancour threw the first four innings, walking eight and hitting two batters. Justin Marenger tossed two innings and Jake Anderson pitched the final inning. Only three of Gladstone's runs were earned. The second game Thurdsday saw Midland Berryhill beat DePere, Wis., 7-1. The ten-team tournament continues with five games in Escanaba on Friday, starting at 10:00 a.m., and four games in Gladstone, starting at 11:30 a.m. Gladstone is home for two games on Friday, against Sault Ste. Marie at 2:00 and Bark River at 7:00. Both will be broadcast on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600). Escanaba is also home for two on Friday, against Sault Ste. Marie at 5:30 and Marquette at 8:00.
