Indians Come Up Short In Johnson Tourney Semis
ESCANABA---The Gladstone Indians made five errors and gave up six runs in the first two innings and lost to DePere, 6-1, in Sunday's semifinal in the Gregg Johnson/Al Erickson Memorial Tournament. Gladstone finished 2-3 in this season-opening event. Dan Paulson and Hunter Staniske had RBI hits for DePere. Gladstone 19-year-old Jake Peterson came on to pitch at the start of the second inning, and two more runs scored...one unearned. The first run came home when DePere's Lucas Reynolds bunted a high pitch and the Indians failed to make the play at first base. Matt Bald scored on the play. Connor Rutherford followed with an RBI single, making it 6-0. The Indians got on the board in the fourth inning when Ben Schwalbach singled home Lucas Weinert. Then, in the fifth inning, the Indians threatened to get closer when they loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of walks and a Braeden Lamberg base hit. But Gladstone got nothing when the next three batters hit two shallow fly balls, and then, a strikeout. Peterson shut the door on DePere after that early scoring spurt, allowing no runs in the final four innings of work on the mound. Gladstone will host Niagara (Wis.) on Wednesday. Game time is 6:30, and it will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box above to see photos and videos from the game. |
