POWER OUTAGE: Peshtigo Boys Handcuff Braves

GLADSTONE---There was a power outage at Don Olsen Field on Friday, but it had nothing to do with the electricity on the scoreboard or in the concession stand.

The Gladstone Braves had a hard time getting any offense going, getting just one base hit and losing to the Peshtigo Bulldogs, 2-0, in Gladstone.

Gladstone second baseman Clay Cole got a base hit to lead off the ballgame, and the Braves would not get another against pitchers Austin and Tyler Marquardt.

In fact, the Braves got only three baserunners the entire game, with Owen Hanson being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning and A.J. Lundberg being safe on an error in the sixth inning.

"It's been a tough year, really, on our hitting," Gladstone Manager Don Lauscher said. "We've just got to find a way to put the bat on the ball, although we did hit a couple hard ones today."

"Ultimately, we've got to start stringing some together. The hitting has been our Achille's heal all year, and it just continued that way today."

The Gladstone line-up was severely weakened before the season began when two-time All-Stater Hunter Garling went down with an elbow injury that required "Tommy John" surgery. And the team's next-best hitter, Tyson Seymour, suffered an ankle injury in Thursday night's win at Marquette, and will be on the bench for at least a week.

Brandon Cooper is out with an arm problem and Braeden Lamberg is limited to DH'ing because of a shoulder injury. But Lauscher is not taking any of that as an excuse.

"It's time for some of the younger guys to step up," Lauscher said, noting that guys liek Lucas Weinert and Owen Hanson had key offensive efforts Thursday in Marquette.

But nobody could get anything going against Austin Marquardt, who threw the first four innings, and Tyler Marquardt, who tossed the final three innings to earn the save.

The lack of offense wasted an excellent pitching performance by Elliot Danhoff, who allowed just three hits and struck out eleven batters over seven innings of work.

Peshtigo scored its two runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Tyler Marquardt hit a pop fly that landed in very short left field for a single. Danhoff then hit two straight batters, including one on an 0-2 pitch. With two out and the bases loaded, Danhoff got Trevor Bloch to hit a slow roller toward shortstop Ben Schwalbach. Schwalbach charged the ball and fielded it cleanly, but his throw to first was in the dirt. Two runs scored.

The game started an hour later than the 4:30 scheduled first pitch because of a time mix-up with the Peshtigo team. Gladstone fell to 7-8 on the season. Peshtigo is now 6-4.

Gladstone returns to action with a doubleheader Monday at Norway, and then hosts Escanaba on Thursday and Sault Ste. Marie on Friday. The games on Thursday and Friday will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and www.rrnsports.com.
