Cubs Win Twice; Indians Split At Sault Tournament
SAULT STE. MARIE---The Escanaba Cubs won both of their games at the Lynn Auto Parts American Legion Baseball Tournament Friday in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Gladstone Indians picked up a dramatic extra-innings win in their first game, but fell flat and lost their second game.
For the Cubs, it was a great day for Devin Olsen. The right-hander pitched a no-hitter as the Cubs shut out the Sault Ste. Marie Eastern U.P. Travelers, 9-0. Then Olsen hit a home run to help Escanaba post an 11-1 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Canada Black Sox.
The Cubs will face Petoskey at 11:00 Saturday morning, and then will take on Sanford at 4:00. Escanaba likely needs one win to advance to the semifinals of the ten-team event.
Meanwhile, the Gladstone Indians fell behind Sanford 3-0 in the early part of the game.
But Gladstone rallied to take a 5-3 lead on a three-run homer by Hayden Hardwick. Sanford tied the game, 5-5, after seven innings, so the tournament then went to the International Tiebreaker rule, where each team starts the extra inning with a runner on second base. Sanford scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-5 lead, but Hardwick ripped another homer to retie the game the game at 7-7.
The game ended in dramatic fashion as Sam Pouliot stepped up and ripped a two-run homer for a "walk-off" 9-7 Indians victory.
After a break, the Indians played the host EUP Travelers, and it was not a fun game for Gladstone. The Indians lost, 4-1, to go to 1-1 in the tournament.
Dustin Peller hit a two-run HR in the top of the first inning to give the EUP team the early lead. Gladstone was held to just four hits and had six runners either picked off or thrown out on the bases.
"Every time we got something started we shot ourselves in the foot," Indians Manager Jim Groleau said. "We did not play smart baseball tonight ".
Pouliot took the loss, for allowing just ne earned run as the Indians commited four errors. Travis Myers earned the win for EUP.
Gladstone faces the Sault Ste. Marie Canada Black Sox Saturday at 1:30, and then will take on Petoskey later in the afternoon.
