Braves Improve To 7-1 After Sweep Over Charlevoix
CHARLEVOIX---The Gladstone High School baseball team went below the Mackinac Bridge for a second straight weekend, and the boys came home with two more wins.

Gladstone swept a doubleheader Saturday from the Charlevoix Rayders, 8-4 and 9-6, in a match-up that was arranged just several days ago.

"We were starting four freshmen today," Gladstone Manager Don Lauscher said. "To play like this is really amazing. Ben Schwalbach played really well at thrd base. And Brandon Cooper did a great job. He played both games at second base, and had five or six putouts, and no errors. I was really pleased with most of what I saw today."

The Braves hit three more home runs on Saturday, to go along with the long balls they hit last weekend in Reed City. This time, it was Justin Jurek, Sam Pouliot, and Hunter Garling who took the Rayders pitchers deep.

"We hit the ball really well today," Lauscher said. "And Rizzo (Jake Peterson) is just ripping the cover off of the ball."

Garling pitched all seven innings of the opener, and all four of the runs against him were unearned runs. In the second game, Pouliot threw 6 1/3 innings for the win, and then Peterson came in to get the final two outs to earn the save.

"We hit well, and we pitched well. But we've got to shore up our defense," Lauscher said. "And we had a couple of baserunning mistakes again, too."

Gladstone played without Christian Groleau and Christian Tackman, who are competing in the FIRST Robotics World Championships in Missouri. Drake Draze was also missing Saturday to attend the Bark River-Harris High School Prom.

Gladstone improved to 7-1 on the season, with five of those wins coming downstate against Reed City, Kingsley, and Charlevoix. The Rayders' record fell to 7-4.

The Braves are scheduled to play a doubleheader on M0nday against Superior Central in Eben. That doubleheader will now be played in Gladstone on Monday, starting at 4:00. Gladstone was then scheduled to travel to Escanaba for a single game Tuesday night. That game will also now be played in Gladstone, starting at 5:30 on Tuesday.
