Gladstone Now 14-1 After Win Over Sault Black Sox
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School baseball team wrapped up a successful week with a 7-3 win over the Sault Ste. Marie (Ont.) Black Sox Saturday in Gladstone. Sam Pouliot shook off a shaky start to pitch five innings to earn the win, allowing just one base hit in the process. He walked two batters and hit a batter in the first inning. "Sam struggled at first, but he settled down and pitched a nice game," Gladstone Manager Don Lauscher said. "By the time we got to the sixth inning, his pitch count was around 85, so it was time to take him out. Sam didn't want to come out, but I had to tell him that this is just his second time out (pitching) this season." Jake Peterson pitched the final two innings in relief. "It was not typcial Rizzo, though," Lauscher said of Peterson. "He walked two guys then plunked another, and then gave up a hit and they scored two runs. But he finished it off." Offensively, Justin Jurek had a single, double, and run batted in. Tom Bailey also had a single and a double, with two runs batted in. And freshman Ben Schwalbach had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. "The kids hit the ball hard again," Lauscher said. "It was Prom Day, so there was a little bit of a 'focus issue'. But overall, they did a good job." Gladstone improved to 14-1 on the season, and is ranked No. 4 in the state in Division Three. The Braves' game against Stephenson set for this Tuesday will now be played on Thursday, at 5:30, at Don Olsen Field. The next action for the Braves will be a doubleheader in Negaunee on Wednesday. "That's fine," Lauscher said. "We can sure use two straight practices right now." Wednesday's games start at 4:00 from Iron Town Field. The games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. |
