DePere Pitchers Blank Cubs At Johnson Tourney
ESCANABA---The Escanaba Cubs got a strong pitching performance from Andrew Sedlar, but they couldn't touch the DePere pitchers in Sunday's final game of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament. Sedlar scattered six hits in a complete-game effort, but Escanaba managed only three hits and lost, 2-0. Sedlar worked 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Cubs had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Lewis Ostrander drew a walk. Tyler Skufca bounced one to short, but it was missplayed. So, the Cubs had the tying runs on base, but Jack Valentine hit one to short for a 6-4-3 double play. It was the fifth ground ball to short that the Cubs hit in the final three innings off the DePere relief pitcher, who has a unique submarine style delivery. Escanaba (2-3) finished with just three base hits. Hunter LaMarch had two of them (one an infield hit in the sixth inning). Sean Bissell had the other base hit. DePere and Midland Berryhill each finished the tournament undefeated. Because of Friday's rainouts, the tournament was changed to an event where every team played at least three games, but there were no semifinals and finals. It's the first time in the two-decade-long history of this tournament that no trophy was awarded. The Cubs will host Marquette in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Al Ness Field. Game time is 4:00.
