KINGSFORD---
The Negaunee High School girls tennis team won the MHSAA Division One Upper Peninsula championship on Wednesday at Kingsford High School, winning four of the eight flights along the way. Negaunee finished with 19 points, while Marquette took second with 14 points and Escanaba was third with 11 points.

Negaunee won championships at #3 and #4 singles, while Marquette's lone title came at #4 doubles. The Redettes were able to take second place as a team, however, because they got runners-up in four different flights.

Gladstone Braves sophomore Tia Schone captured a U.P. Championship at #2 singles. Schone cruised past Marquette's Annabella Martinson in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0, and then defeated Negaunee's Aubrey Johnson in the final, 6-2, 6-1.

For the Miners, the #2 doubles team of Olivia Lunseth and Sage Juntti...and the #3 doubles team of Kallen Schultz and Madalynn Peters both cruised to U.P. Championships. Those two teams went undefeated all season, and did not lose a single set.

Also winning U.P. Championships for Negaunee were Rhena Nelson at #3 singles (6-0, 6-3 over Marquette's Cecillia Jacuzzo), and Liliana Saunders at #4 singles (6-2, 6-0 over Westwood's Samantha Ruby).

Escanaba won the championships at #1 singles and #1 doubles.

Escanaba's Sophia Derkos completed a dominating undefeated season in which she did not lose a single set. On Wednesday, Derkos was equally dominant, defeating Negaunee's Jordan Enright in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1, and beating Marquette's Kaia Miller in the final, 6-1, 6-1.

Escanaba's top doubles team of Delaney McIntyre and Natalie Williams needed three sets to win the championship over Negaunee's Stella Harris and Madison Frustaglio.

The Eskymo duo easily won the first set, 6-0, before the Miner girls bounced back to win the second set, 6-2.

McInyre and Williams rebounded to win the decisive third set, 6-1, completing a season that saw them lose just one match.

Marquette's #4 doubles team of Lyndsey Lake and Lexi Hammerstrom defeated Escanaba's Carly Bowden and Molly Smale in a tough semifinal match, 7-6, 6-3, and then defeated Negaunee's Paityn Brunette and Autumn Ring in the final, 6-4, 6-2.
