HOMECOMING STUNNER! Cougars Rout Rockets
EBEN JUNCTION---It was not a Saturday at Superior Central High School. True, the calendar read "Saturday, October 21, 2017". But for the Cougars, it was Super Sunday as the rival Rapid River Rockets came to town for 48 minutes of football. And for those 48 minutes, the Cougars played like it was their Super Bowl, leading from start to finish and beating Rapid River, 46-22, under picture-perfect weather conditions in Eben Junction. Quarterback Beau Rondeau threw four touchdown passes and ran in another as the Cougars beat the Rockets for the first time ever in football. Add to the emotion that it was Cougar Homecoming, and the fact that Superior Central had a 3-5 record and didn't have much to lose. They were supposed to lose. They didn't, though, as Rondeau threw two touchdown passes to Wade Krysiak, including a 45-yard strike on 4th and 9 that gave the Cougars the early lead. Rondeau also threw two touchdowns to Josh Kulik, both from in close. The first half ended with an electrifying 73-yard touchdown run by Roubens Fink after the Cougars called a time out to set up that final play. That made it 32-8. Superior Central's defense was tough as well, with two interceptions in the first half, including one taken back 70 yards by Nathan Frusti deep into Rocket territory. For Homecoming, Austin Swetich was named Homecoming King, while Monica Steinhoff was named Homecoming Queen. That, at the time, made it an 8-8 game. But the Rockets wouldn't score again until the fourth quarter, and by that time, the game was essentially over. Nate Olsen and Gavin Harris scored those touchdowns for Rapid River. The Rockets played without their top player, Logan Hardwick, who continued to nurse a shoulder injury. And with their seven victories, the Rockets were already assured of a playoff berth, and will likely still host their first game, even with the loss. Rapid River finds out its playoff assignment on Sunday night. Superior Central finishes the season 4-5, with a bright future, as the core of the Cougar team is made up of underclassmen who will be back for a senior year in 2018.
