Gladstone Schools Make Changes To Athletic Codes

GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Area Public Schools have made changes to the athletic code that all students must adhere to in order to play on Braves sports teams.

One addition is a Fan Code of Conduct, and another is a reduction of sanctions against a student who "self-reports" an infraction, on his/her first offense.

Another change is that a student will be expected to be in class at the regularly-scheduled time, even if the bus from an away sporting event arrives back in Gladstone late in the prior evening.

Gladstone Athletic Director Andy Jacques says the changes were approved this week by the Gladstone School Board. A summary of the changes:

BEHAVIOR
"If, after a complete investigation by the Athletic Director and/or Principal, an individual is found to have committed a violation, the minimum penalty shall be:

First Offense: Loss of 25 % of the season of competition in which the student is competing or would be competing in a succeeding season. If an athlete self-discloses, the athlete will have a loss of 10% of the season and 10 hours of community serviceIn order for the athlete to fulfill their suspension, they will have to finish the season in good standing.

Other penalties for additional code offenses is the same as before.

ADULT FAN BEHAVIOR GUIDELINE

This clause is entirely new to the Gladstone athletic code:

"If a fan is acting in an unsportsmanlike manner, he/she will be approached and be advised of the inappropriate behavior by a staff member or the game management, with a follow up letter and/or call by the Athletic Director. If the behavior continues, they will be asked to leave the contest/event."

"A second offense will result in a suspension from events which the administration deems appropriate. The third offense will result in a suspension from all athletic contests for the remainder of the school year. This process may be accelerated if the administration deems it necessary."

LATE ARRIVAL
This clause is entirely new to the Gladstone athletic code:

"Sometimes due to weather conditions or bus trouble, athletes and coaches arrive back at Gladstone at a late hour. All athletes will be expected to attend school the next day regardless of what time you get home the night before."

TRANSPORTATION
When school district provides transportation to and from scheduled athletic contests, athletes are expected to ride to and from contests with the team. Exceptions may be made for the athlete to ride to or from contests with their parents only, after prior written notification from the parent, is received by the coach.

The change to this clause is for a second offense: loss of athletic participation for the remainder of the season.
