Lamberg, Schwalbach Shut Down Norway Knights
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves posted a pair of shutouts on Monday, beating the Norway Knights, 3-0 and 10-0, in a doubleheader at Don Olsen Field. Braeden Lamberg pitched a one-hitter in the opener and Ben Schwalbach allowed just two hits in the twinbill nightcap. In Monday's opener, Gladstone took advantage of two Norway errors to score its first run in the opening inning. Ben Schwalbach had an RBI single scoring Hunter Garling, who was safe on an error. The Braves missed another chance to score in that inning when Jake Peterson was thrown out at home plate on Jurek's base hit. In the second inning, Gladstone loaded the bases on three walks, and Garling smacked one up the middle. Norway pitcher John Edwardsen snared it and turned a double play. "You win some, you lose some," Garling said, shaking his head. In the third inning, Jurek led off with a long home run to left field, making it 2-0. Schwalbach, who had four straight hits on Saturday in Wausau after being benched, kept up his hot hitting with a double. He scored when Tyson Seymour struck out. Norway catcher Dane Vandenheuval threw to first, and Schwalbach went to third. The return throw to third base was in the dirt and it went into foul territory, scoring Schwalbach with the third run of the game. That was all that Braeden Lamberg needed on the mound. He had a no-hitter for three innings before Bryce Grayvold got a base hit to lead off the fourth. That was the only hit that Norway managed against Lamberg, who fanned two batters and walked two. "I really just tried to throw strikes and my defense had my back," Lamberg said. "I was really just pounding the outside corners and I guess pitching low really helped." Garling had the team's only other hit. In the second game, Schwalbach needed just five pitches to retire the Knights in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half, Jake Peterson walked and rode home on a two-run home run by Garling. Garling had a single, triple, and homer in his three at-bats. "I just came out feeling pretty good, from the beginning in warm-ups," Garling said. "And I didn't hit the best in the first game, but I had a couple shots that didn't go down." Garling joked that if the game had continued beyond the fourth inning mercy rule, he would have done everything possible to get a double to complete the cycle. "I told Coach right before we went out for the last inning that I just needed a double," he said. " And right away, I guess I came out! (But) it's nice to see other kids play, too." Bal was relieved by Bryce Plante, who pitched the rest of the way, allowing seven runs to go along with Bal's three. For Gladstone, Schwalbach retired the first ten men he faced and had a perfect game going in the fourth inning. But Adam Faull came off the bench to get a single to left field, and Taylor Bonetti had an infield base hit. Schwalbach also walked Donte Pedrotti to load the bases, but caught Josh Boulden looking on strikes to end the game. Since these were six-inning games, the mercy rule was reached in the fourth inning. A couple of highlights for the Braves included Elliot Danhoff going 2-for-2 in the designated hitter's spot, and Jake Wachholz getting a walk and RBI single in a rare start at first base. Clay Cole had a single and Lucas Weinert had an RBI ground out. Norway had entered the doubleheader with an 11-1 record, mostly on the arm of Edwardsen, who earned three pitching victories in several days last week. Gladstone improved to 15-6 on the season. The Braves will travel to Escanaba on Thursday to face the Eskymos. Game time is set for 4:30 at Al Ness Field. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
