Lynch Handcuffs Braves In Regular Season Finale
MARQUETTE---Riley Lynch scattered five hits over six innings and struck out eleven batters to lead the Marquette Redmen to a 5-1 win over the Gladstone Braves Friday night in Marquette. It was just the second win ever for the Redmen over the Braves. Lynch, a left-hander, gave up a run in the top of the first inning when Hunter Garling singled, stole second, and scored when Justin Jurek's hard-hit ball glanced off of the foot of the infield umpire, and into the outfield. That would be Gladstone's only run. Jake Peterson pitched for the Braves, and he held the Redmen off the board for the first three innings. He was helped by Jurek, who threw out two runners trying to steal second base. And second baseman Braeden Lamberg caught a line drive for a double play. But in the fourth inning, Marquette got to Peterson. Lynch led off with a single, and Brandon Lotterman followed with a double. Trevor Koski walked to load the bases, and Peterson uncorked a wild pitch that scored Lynch with the tying run. Then Garrett Finkbeiner hit one that took a huge hop over the head of Gladstone first baseman Tyson Seymour. That scored two runs, giving Marquette a 3-1 lead. Lynch started to tire in the sixth inning when he walked Ben Schwalbach and Lucas Weinert, his only walks of the game. But he struck out Lamberg to end the threat. Marquette took advantage with Jack Kochevar getting an RBI double and Austin Wachina getting an RBI single to make it 5-1. Marquette improved to 19-8 on the season, and the Redmen compete in the Sault Ste. Marie Invitational on Saturday. Gladstone finished the regular season with a 22-9 record. The Braves will open district tournament play on Tuesday with a home game against Hancock. The game is set for 6:00 and will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on www.rrnsports.com.
