DePere Tops Midland Berryhill To Win Tournament
ESCANABA---There is a really big lake that separates the DePere American Legion baseball team from Wisconsin and the Midland baseball team from Lower Michigan. But these two programs have met quite a few times in recent years, mostly here in Delta County, at what was once called the Delta County Jaycees Tournament, and is now known as the Gregg Johnson/Al Erickson Memorial Tournament. These two teams also met a few years ago in the national regional cahmpionship game, with Midland beating DePere on the way to a World Series title. Here in the Upper Peninsula, they met on Sunday in the tournament championship game. And the boys from suburban Green Bay came through with a 9-2 win to take the trophy back to Wisconsin. Midland had posted a 3-1 win over DePere Friday during pool play. Sunday actually started with two semifinal games. Midland topped Kingsford, 8-1, in Escanaba, while DePere topped downstate powerhouse Blissfield, 4-3, in Gladstone. Ben Reynolds hit a two run home run during DePere's four-run fourth inning to take the lead. Leadoff hitter Jack Paulson had a a two-run single during that inning as well. In the sixth inning, DePere scored four more runs. Center fielder Emmett Kulick had an RBI double, followed by another RBI double by the left fielder Connor Rutherford. Sam Deruyter also had an RBI double during that inning, which put the game away. Midland had opened the scoring with left fielder Jeremiah Altenburg reaching on an infield error, and then he scored on a wild pitch. Midland's other run came in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Carson Eby. Carson Jacques earned the win on the mound for DePere, throwing all seven innings. He gave up two runs (one earned), walked two and struck out one. For Midland, Jordan Patty took the loss on the mound. He threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Patty walked two and struck out two.
