Braves Make Statements In Sweep Over Negaunee

NEGAUNEE---The district baseball tournament is just two weeks away, so it was time for the Gladstone Braves to make a statement Wednesday night in Negaunee.

And the Braves proved that they will a tough foe in the upcoming post-season contests as they posted a doubleheader sweep, 10-0 and 3-1, at Irontown Field.

That was one message sent: to the Negaunee Miners: we are still the team to beat in the Upper Peninsula. The other message sent was by Braves Manager Don Lauscher, who benched several of his usual starters during the opener due to recent unispired play.

Lauscher wanted to make a point to some of his players, while at the same time, beating Negaunee. And it worked out as the younger Braves provided a 10-0 victory.

Gladstone scored an unearned run in the first inning, and then scored twice in the third inning on an RBI single by Ben Schwalbach and a sacrafice fly by Tys0n Seymour.

That 3-0 lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth inning as Elliot Danhoff, Jake Peterson and Schwalbach came through with run-scoring base hits. A wild pitch and an error also scored  Braves runs.

The final runs scored in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Peterson and an RBI single by Lucas Weinert. In the game, Gladstone had 13 hits, with Peterson, Schwalbach, and Danhoff (in the #9 spot), all getting three hits apiece.

Brandon Cooper threw all five innings for the Braves.

He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Kenton Rajala's pop fly landed in right field. Cooper allowed only four base runners (two on errors) during his five innings of work on the mound.

Ryan Tossava took the loss for Negaunee, throwing three-plus innings before suffering a leg injury on a Lucas Weinert bunt single in the fourth inning. Shane Ring finished for Negaunee, allowing two runs on six base hits.

In the second game, Negaunee scored in the first inning when Jeff Matthews put down a nice bunt and later scored on a base hit by Grant Johnson off of Braves starter Danhoff.

The Braves tied the game in the fourth inning when Hunter Garling was safe on an error and came home on a sacrafice fly by Lucas Weinert.

Gladstone took the lead in the fifth inning when Braeden Lamberg led off with a single.

He scored on a booming double to the fence off of Schwalbach's bat. A.J. Lundberg followed with his second straight hit. This one was a single that made it a 3-1 Braves lead.

That was enough offense for the Braves pitchers, as Danhoff (two innings), Lamberg (two innings), and Peterson (one inning), combined to throw a one-hitter. Gladstone (19-8) will travel to Green Bay Notre Dame on Saturday. Negaunee (5-10) travels to the Escanaba tournament on Saturday, and hosts Hancock on Friday.
