Braves Hang On For Rare Win Over GB Notre Dame
GREEN BAY---The Gladstone High School Baseball team built a 5-0 lead and then hung on to post a 5-4 victory over the Green Bay Notre Dame Tritons Saturday afternoon in Green Bay. Braves senior Jake Peterson pitched six scoreless innings and the Braves survived a scary seventh inning to beat the Tritons for the first time ever. Don Lauscher has coached against Notre Dame both while at Escanaba and at Gladstone over the past eight years. The results had not been pretty for Lauscher's teams. "We played them four times when I was in Escanaba, and two times in Gladstone," Lauscher said on Saturday. "They ten-runned us every single time." But not this time. Peterson was on his game on the mound, showing that his shoulder and ankle woes are not going to slow him down. He held the usually-hard-hitting Notre Dame line-up off the board for six innings. In fact, Peterson was throwing a no-hitter. "His curveball was awesome, his change-up was good, and his fastball, I mean, that's the hardest that I've ever seen Rizzo throw," Lauscher said. "Once he's in the groove, no one's going to hit him." So, with a 5-0 lead entering the seventh inning, and no hits on the board for the Tritons, Lauscher pulled Peterson from the hill. Was he just being mean? Nope. "He (Peterson) was at 105 pitches," Lauscher said. "I mean, he had all of those strikeouts. He begged us to let him stay in, but we (coaches) said absoultely not." Lauscher said that Peterson's arm needed to be protected, with the district tournaments less than two weeks away. "I was thinking about pulling him at around 90 pitches or so, but we let him go another inning." But, that was it. No-hitter, or not. Lauscher brought in freshman Braeden Lamberg to close out the game, but he walked the first three men that he faced. So, Lauscher turned to Hunter Garling to close it. The Tritons got a two-run base hit, and then a groundout scored another run. But with the tying run on second, Garling got two fly balls to wrap up the Braves victory. Offensively, Gladstone scored its five runs on just three base hits. The biggest was by Lamberg in the fourth inning: a two-run double off of the fence. The Braves scored four runs in that inning, after breaking a scoreless tie with a run in the second inning. Lauscher says that the first run got his team going, and led the boys to play with a level of energy that he says has been lacking recently, even during Gladstone wins. "We came to the day today, and the kids were really fired up," he said. "There was a lot of chatter in the dugout. It was like we were having fun again. They were into it. That's what I was really happy about. We really played well." Gladstone (20-8) will travel to Crivitz, Wis., for a single game Monday at 6:00 ET. |
