Marquette Sentinels U-19 Hockey Fall At Nationals
BURLINGTON, Vt.---The Marquette City Insurance U-19 girls hockey team had their season come to an end Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Team South Dakota at the USA Hockey National Tournament in Burlington, Vermont. The Michigan state champions finished with a 1-2 record in pool play, and finished ninth out of the 12 teams entered in the tournament. The Sentinels lost out on a spot in the quarterfinal round when the team they beat on Thursday won their final pool play game in regulation on Saturday. That Illinois team edged Marquette by one standings point. On Saturday, Marquette goaltender Hannah Reisland was busy, stopping 28 of the 33 shots she faced. The Sentinels had 21 shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. South Dakota scored three power play goals, with Maddie Schultz getting a hat trick. Marquette won its opening game on Thursday, beating the Naperville, Illinois, Sabres, 2-1, in overtime. The U.P. girls lost to the Massachusetts Spitfires, 7-0, on Friday. They needed a win on Saturday to advance, or a loss by the Sabres. They got neither. The Sentinels were one of two Marquette girls hockey teams to win state championships, as the mBank U-19 girls also won the state trophy. Overall, it was a successful year for Upper Peninsula junior hockey teams, with several state championship trophies coming back across the Mackinac Bridge. The Escanaba Hawks Riverside Auto Bantam "B" and Bink's Coca Cola Pee-Wee "B" teams both won state titles. Also winning state titles: the Newberry Electric Tahquamenon Squirt "B" team, and the Iron River Midget "B" hockey team. |
