Escanaba Hawks Win U.P. Bantam, PeeWee Titles
ESCANABA----Two Escanaba junior hockey teams won Upper Peninsula championships on Sunday as the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association's District Eight Playdowns wrapped up across the U.P. In Manistique, the Escanaba Riverside Bantam 'B' team won the championship with a 4-3 victory over Iron River. Escanaba trailed, 3-2, entering the third period, but Ethan Silverstone tied the game with three minutes left, and then Kyle Krutina scored 22 seconds later. Goaltender Trevor Denome made 25 saves, including one at the end. Escanaba won its semifinal game earlier in the day, 8-1, over Calumet. In Pool Play, Escanaba beat Negaunee, 8-3, and Keweenaw Bay, 4-2, before losing to Iron River. Escanaba advances to the state tournament March 11-13 in downstate Monroe. In Munising, the Escanaba Bink's PeeWee 'B' team won its championship, 4-3, over Calumet. The Escanaba boys took a 3-0 lead, but the Calymet boys rallied to tie it. Ayden Mylander scored the winning goal in the third period. He scored two goals in the championship game, and Nick Kolich also scored twice. Escanbaa won semifinal game over Copper Country, 6-2, earlier on Sunday. In Pool Play, the Esky boys beat Negaunee, 7-3, and Keweenaw Bay, 8-2, before losing to Munising, 4-3. In the game against Negaunee, Mylander had three goals and three assists. Escanaba advances to the state tournament in Alpena, March 4-6. In Negaunee, the Tahquamenon Area Newberry Electric Squirt 'B' team won the U.P. championship, 3-0, over Iron Mountain.
