Eskymos Sweep Jets In First-Ever Baseball Meeting

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos met the North Central Jets for the first time on the baseball diamond on Thursday as the teams played a doubleheader at Al Ness Field.

The Eskymos emerged with a doubleheader sweep, 9-1 and 17-6, as both teams used the twinbill to get ready for the district tournaments. The Jets, in their second year of baseball, had numerous defensive errors that helped the Eskymos to score runs.

In the opener, Dawson Bilski pitched five innings for the Jets, and of the nine runs the Eskymos scored, none of them were earned.

Escanaba had just three hits in the game: by Tyler Skufca, Justin Popelka, and Parker LaMarch. Popelka and LaMarch both drove in two runs to lead the Eskymo offense.

Freshman Johnny Schlenvogt pitched a four-hitter to earn the win in the opener.

In the second game, Escanaba scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning to take most of the suspense out of the contest. NCA senior Rob Granquist was charged with all nine of those runs, but only two of them were earned, thanks to defensive errors.

North Central did score five runs in the top of the second inning off Eskymo pitcher Justin Popelka, but he settled down from there and the Jets scored only one more time the rest of the way.

Logan Lamb and Parker LaMarch each drove in three runs in the nightcap.

Escanaba hosts the Bink's Coca-Cola Invitational on Saturday. The Eskymos will face Negaunee at 10:00 a.m. That game will not be broadcast on the radio.

Escanaba will play either Shawano (Wis.) or Bark River-Harris later in the day on Saturday. That game will be broadcast on the radio, either in the third place game at 3:00 or the title game at 5:30.
