Eskymo Baseball Wins One, Loses One In Wisconsin
SHIOCTON, Wis.---You win some, you lose some. The Escanaba High School baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning on Saturday and cruised to a 10-5 win over the Seymour (Wis.) Thunder in Wisconsin. Later in the day, the Eskymos had a lead over the host Shiocton Chiefs, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and lost a wild game, 9-7. Against Seymour, Sean Bissell, Brandon Punzel, and Logan Lamb all had two hits and scored two runs. Lewis Ostrander and Lamb each had RBI hits during that first inning. Tyler Skufca pitched the first three innings and struck out six batters, walking just one. Justin Popelka threw the final four innings, striking out three and walking two. Escanaba had nine base hits in the win, after having 11 hits Tuesday against Marinette. The game against Shiocton was a back-and-forth affair. Lamb and Skufca each had RBI hits in the first two innings to give the Eskymos a 2-0 lead. But the Chiefs scored four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Escanaba scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead, but the Chiefs scored three in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead and earn the victory. "Everybody played,"Schwalbach said. "I'm just trying to get some work in for as many guys as I can. It's early. Everyone got reps, and that will help us in the long run." Escanaba (2-1) will have its home opener Wednesday afternoon against the Marquette Redmen. Game time is set for 5:30 from Al Ness Field. Schwalbach says there will be a "work bee" on Sunday to get the field ready for a Tuesday practice, and for the game. Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on rrnsports.com.
