Eskymos Lose, Tie Baseball Games In Green Bay
SUAMICO, Wis.---The Escanaba High School baseball team played a pair of games in the Green Bay area Monday night, although they weren't quite what Eskymo Coach Kirk Schwalbach expected when his team journeyed two hours southward. The Eskymos lost to the BayPort Pirates, 6-5, and then tied the Bay Port JV team, 0-0. Schwalbach says that when the Eskymos arrived in the northern Green Bay suburb, they found out that they would not be facing a full BayPort team. That's because the Pirates had exceeded the number of varsity games that they could play under Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association rules. So, BayPort would count that game as a scrimmage, and played only its underclassmen. Then, in the "sec0nd game", the Eskymos ended up playing the BayPort junior varsity team, and it ended in a scoreless tie. "I didn't know that they (BayPort) wouldn't be counting the games (in the standings)," Schwalbach said. "But we want to keep them on our schedule (in the future). And we got a lot out of those games. We got a loss and a tie, and I should be disappointed, but I'm not." Schwalbach says that he is counting the games on the Eskymo record, because his entire team played. And that includes managers Aaron Young and Courage Krueger, who got to play for the first time in an Eskymo uniform. And Krueger got a base hit. "They were so happy," Schwalbach said about the managers getting the chance to play. Schwalbach says the Bay Port baseball program has 26 players on the varsity team, 24 on the JV, and has two freshmen teams in which no boys who try out are cut. In the first game, Justin Popelka pitched all the way until Brandon Punzel came on to get the final two outs. Punzel then threw the entire second game, getting a tie against a Pirate JV team that had a 15-3 record entering the day. Escanaba returns to action on Thursday with a home game against the Marinette Marines. It will be Parent's Night and Senior Night at Al Ness Field. The game time has been changed from 4:30 to 5:30. It will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600). |
