Escanaba Native Has Day To Remember In London
![]() LONDON---The Detroit Lions rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons, 22-21, Sunday in London, England. And in attendance was Escanaba native Kelton Heller, who is stationed at an Air Force base there. Heller, in his United State Air Force uniform, held the American flag as the National Anthem was played before the NFL game. ![]() Heller says it was an honor to be there. "I'm not gonna lie," Heller said late Sunday night. "I was a little bit nervous. But everyone was shouting 'USA, USA' when we were in our uniforms. So it was pretty cool to get that experience, especially in Wembley Stadium, on the big stage." Heller, who was recently named Airmen of the Quarter for his job performance within his unit, said he got to meet many of the Detroit Lions players. "We got free tickets, free everything at the game," Heller said. "We got to sit in the Lions post-game press conference room. We had to wait to go on the field, for the guy to get his cues, for us to go onto the field. Then, we just went out there and did our thing." What was it like for him to stand on that field as the Star Spangled Banner was played? ![]() Heller, a 2011 Escanaba High School graduate, was a multi-sport athlete for the Eskymos, competing in football, basketball, and track. His younger brother, Travis, was a state-ranked wrestler and All-U.P. quarterback. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 2014. Kelton's younger sister, Callie, still attends Escanaba High School, where she plays softball and runs cross-country. Kelt0n Heller was honored by the City of Escanaba, in recognition of his role in Sunday's NFL game. Escanaba Mayor Marc Tall signed a proclamation declaring October 26th as "Kelton J. Heller Day" in Escanaba. Heller's mother, Marjery, accepted the award on her son's behalf at last Thursday night's Escanaba City Council meeting. "That was unique," Kelton Heller said about having a day named after him. "I didn't expect it. It's a great honor to have that."
