Eskymo JVs Cash In On Mistakes To Beat Gladstone
![]() ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School junior varsity football team was opportunistic Thursday night, building a big lead and then topping Gladstone, 35-0. Escanaba rebounded from last week's tough 8-7 loss to Menominee by beating its cross-bay rivals, improving to 5-2 on the season. Gladstone fell to 3-4 on the season. ![]() Justin Popelka had two short touchdown runs and a 40-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Willette, helping the Eskymos to build a 21-0 lead at halftime. Popelka had his third TD run of the night in the second half, and Brett Stalboerger had a "pick six" interception return for a 38-yard touchdown for the Eskymos. Gladstone's offense moved the ball well at times, with Darin Johnson passing for...and recieving...several first down catches. Casey Wolf had two straight pass receptions of over 20 yards from quarterback Ben Schwalbach in the second half. But, no points. Wolf had two quarterback sacks for the Braves, but the Eskymo offense was able to move the ball on the running of Breyden Papineau and the duo threat of Willette. Paul Carne was a perfect five-for-five on extra points for the Eskymos. Escanaba hosts Sault Ste. Matrie next Thursday while the Braves visit Kingsford. The Upper Peninsula Youth Football League had its mini-games at halftime of this JV contest. See photos from the evening by clicking the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box at the top of this page.
