Esky Freshmen Outgun Negaunee In Home Opener
![]() ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School freshman football team got to play at home for the first time this season Wednesday night, and the boys did well. Escanaba's ninth graders beat Negaunee, 34-6, to improve to 4-1 on the season. ![]()
Jonathon Schlenvoght is double-teamed.
In the third quarter, the lead grew to 27-0 when 6-foot-1, 225-pound freshman Cody Vandermissen powered his way into the end zone from four yards out. Escanaba's final touchdown came on a 51-yard scamper by Gavin Schwalbach in the fourth quarter. Schwalbach, normally a guard, then used a head-fake and speed. The Eskymos also got big defensive plays, including pass interceptions by Chris Salo and Ethan Baribeau. Baribeau's pick came off a deflection by Gage Kitson. Escanaba Coach Dave Wilson routinely substitued throughout the night, using both Krueger and Aaron Young at quarterback. The Eskymos also played without top player Scout Wunder, who was moved up to the junior varsity team for the week.
