Nolde 'Coming Home' To Be Esky Athletic Director
 ESCANABA---Escanaba High School has a new athletic director. Escanaba alum Nick Nolde has been hired to take over the department, two months after the resignation of Dave Wilson. Nolde has been the athletic director and Dean of Students at Bark River-Harris High School the past couple of years. "The job in Escanaba is certainly a step up in terms of responsibility and the number of events to cover," Nolde said. "But I feel that I'm ready. It's gonna be nice to be back in town. My wife and kids live in town, not even five minutes from the school." "Being an EHS graduate, it feels like a homecoming and I'm excited to get started." Nolde was a multi-sport athlete at Escanaba High School, graduating in 1998. He became a Minor League Baseball umpire for four-and-a-half years, before deciding to come back to the Upper Peninsula. Nolde, 33, has a wife and two kids, and continues to officiate high school sporting events across the U.P. He has done that for 14 years. Nolde says one thing that he focused on in Bark River was sportsmanship. "I had parent meetings and talked to our coaches about trying to improve sportsman ship across the board," Nolde said. "That's something I will try to do here in Escanaba." The life of an athletic director is not easy, with work to do during the day and many sporting events to manage at night. Many times, it can be a 13-hour day, or more. "It's a lot of time," Nolde said. "This was a family decision. Living in town, it'll be nice to pop home for a while before covering an event. In Bark River, I couldn't do that." Wilson resigned in May after seven years as Escanaba's athletic director. He will become a teacher in the school, and will do some coaching. Nolde will not only be the athletic director, but he will also serve as the school's Student Services coordinator. |
