13-14 GIRLS DISTRICT RESULTS---ESCANABA CHAMPS
The Escanaba Cubs carried an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against the Kimberly Cougars Saturday in Wisconsin. But walks, hit-battsmen, passed balls, errors, and a few hits led to an eight-run outburst that gave Kimberly a 10-8 win. The Cubs also lost to Highland, Indiana, 10-0, earlier in the day. The Upper Peninsula All-Star Football game was held Saturday at the Superior Dome, and Delta County was well-represented as the East topped the West, 42-14. Escanaba's Austin Young scored a touchdown and was given the tournament's "character award", and Bark River-Harris standout Jake Kleiman had a 62-yard run that set up Young's TD.
Leah Wigger shot a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Island Resort Championship on Saturday to take a two-shot lead over Aimee Neff. The Escanaba Cubs opened tournament play in Kimberly, Wis., on Friday, and faced a tough opponent right off the bat. The Cubs fell to Appleton Post 38, 10-0, at Sunset Park. The Escanaba Cubs beat the Marquette Blues for the second straight Wednesday night, but this time, it was much different than last week's wild 11-9 win at Haley Field. The Escanaba Junior Cubs swept an American Legion Baseball doubleheader from the Mid County Mavericks, 15-8 and 15-7, Sunday afternoon in Daggett. Andrew Miller and Storm Fournier combined to get the win on the mound in the opener, while Andrew Sedlar and Alex Ruatti pitched the second game. The Junior Cubs are now 8-0. The Gladstone Indians came oh so close to advancing to the championship game of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament on Sunday....after getting a lot of help just to make the semifinals. Gladstone led top-seeded DePere, 5-3, in the seventh inning, but the Panthers rallied to beat the Indians, 6-5, in nine innings. The Escanaba Cubs played five excellent innings of baseball against Midland Berrryhill on Saturday as the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament continued. But the wheels fell off in the sixth inning and the Cubs lost, 8-0. Later, in the win-or-else game against Chief Pontiac, the Cubs committed six errors and lost, 7-1. It was All-Star Saturday in St. Ignace as the Upper Peninsula's best high school senior basketball players competed in two All-Star games. Escanaba's Olivia Nash was the MVP in the girls game as the South beat the North, 80-72. In the boys game, Sault Ste. Marie's Steve Angeli was the MVP as the North won, 104-91.
