ST. IGNACE---The best graduating senior basketball players from across the Upper Peninsula converged on St. Ignace Saturday for the U.P. All-Star Basketball Classic.
In the girls game, Escanaba's Olivia Nash was the Most Valuable Player as the South beat the North, 80-72. Nash had 15 points and 21 rebounds in the victory. She will attend Oakland University this fall. Other local players contributed as well.
Jaime Madalinski (Bark River-Harris), Kelly Bintner (Rapid River), Taylor Granquist (North Central), and Gabby Cappaert (Stephenson) all scored nine points apiece in the South victory. Lauren Goldthorpe of St. Ignace led the South in scoring with 16 points.
Gladstone's Jammie Botruff made the roster, but did not play due to an injury. But Braves Coach Karl Dollhopf was in charge of the South team as the head coach.

In the boys game, the North outscored the South, 104-91.
Sault Ste. Marie's Steve Angeli had 18 points and ten assists and was chosen as the MVP.
Munising's Kenya Oas had 18 points to help the North team's scoring effort.

Four other North players also scored in double figures. Brimley's Mike Kuenzer, Ewen-Trout Creek's Jordan LaPlant, and Rudyard's Tyler Wilson all had 13 points apiece.
Calumet's Andrew Steber added 11 points for the winners.
Manistique's Kyle Tiglas scored 19 points and Carney-Nadeau's Lucas Moreau added 16 points for the South All-Stars. Jake Kleiman of Bark River-Harris and Bryce Bilski of North Central both contributed six points, and Bilski did well in the three-point shooting contest.
The South led by six points after one quarter but could not keep it up.
