The Raiders went on a 20-0 run after the Norse had taken a 10-7 lead to take all suspense out of what was Bay's first-ever conference game since joining the league this season.
“I thought we came out strong, and I think Grand Rapids knew that it was going to possibly be a close one, so they put a little bit more pressure on us,” Norse Coach Matt Gregory said. “We were in a man defense, and after a while, they started to really use some speed on offense and we looked like we just couldn't get to spots quick enough. We, unfortunately, gave them way too many offensive rebounds. We gave them way too many close looks at the basket, two times in a row, three times in a row. Obviously, that's going to make it so lopsided like it was today.”
The Norse players were hoping to give Gregory a birthday present in Saturday's contest, and early on, Claire Vanginhoven of Gladstone nailed two triples and scored eight points, and Superior Central's Emma Rutter knocked down a jumper, and the Norse had a 10-7 lead.
But the next 20 points went to GRCC, with Sally Merrill scoring ten of them. Marlene Bussler knocked down a triple, and Alyssa Katerberg nailed two triples. GRCC exploded to a 41-22 halftime lead.
One positive for Bay was Gregory's ability to get Amya Harris some playing time in her hometown of Grand Rapids. She normally doesn't play much, but played for most of the second half on Saturday, and even knocked down a three-point basket in the fourth quarter.
The Raiders finished the game with 30 offensive rebounds and the Norse had 18 turnovers. That led to GRCC getting off an incredible 95 shots from the floor (they made 33 of them).
Vanginhoven led the Norse in scoring with13 points. Leah Allan chipped in seven points and seven rebounds. Tianna Taylor, despite foul trouble, had a team high ten rebounds.
GRCC (7-4 overall, 1-0 MCCAA) got 21 points and 18 rebounds from Merrill. Allison Kellogg also had a double-double of ten points and 13 rebounds for the Raiders.
Bay College (4-11 overall, 0-1 MCCAA) will try to break its seven-game losing streak when it plays at home Wednesday night against a new team, North Central Michigan College out of Petoskey. The Timberwolves are 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the MCCAA after they lost their opener Saturday to Mid-Michigan College in Mt. Pleasant, 96-48.
Wednesday's game at the Bay College Gym starts at 5:30 and will be broadcast live on FM-106.3 and on-line at www.radioresultsnetwork.com. |
