SUNDAY GAME SUMMARY

The Marquette Redmen boys soccer team traveled to Gaylord on September 11 for a varsity soccer match and secured a 3–2 come from behind victory.

Gaylord opened the scoring at the 12 minute mark before sophomore Cody Struck put in a rebound off a senior Ezra Pickard shot. Gaylord scored a penalty kick at the 30 minute mark for a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half, senior Max Dawson was able to tie the score up from an Ezra Pickard assist. That combo hooked up again with about 10 minutes to go in the game to secure the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki faced 8 shots in the first half and 6 in the second half.

“It was a great game and we really had some players step up off the bench. We were down three defensive starters and the team rallied without them. Alexi Caron, Dixon Poggi, and Will Salo were big contributors in the game.” -coach Dan Salmon

Marquette is now 11-2-1 on the season and travel to the Lakeland Union tournament in Minocqua Wisconsin on Saturday.

SATURDAY'S GAME SUMMARY

The Marquette Redmen boys varsity soccer team traveled to Traverse City on Saturday for a boys soccer contest and they came away with a 5–1 win over Traverse City Central.

After a hard fought scoreless first half, junior Ethan Sandstrom was able to get Marquette on the board. Sandstrom headed in the ball off a sophomore Mason Bocklund pass.

TCC tied the game up moments later on a corner kick. Senior Max Dawson put the Redman back in the lead off a penalty kick at the 10 minute mark.

At the 20 minute mark, Dawson scored his second goal off a senior Ezra Pickard pass. Senior Evan Sysko then extended the lead to 4-1 with a bicycle kick goal from a corner kick assist from Max Dawson.

TCC was awarded a penalty kick with 10 minutes to go but did not convert and Marquette was able to top off the scoring on a Dawson hat-trick which was assisted by sophomore Kaleb Chipelewski.

Sophomore goaltender Edan Hautamaki faced two shots in the first half and eight in the second half.

“Our defense did a great job tonight holding them to one goal. Traverse City dialed it up in the second half and we matched them in the intensity tonight and outplayed them. Evan Sysko‘s goal was one of those highlight reel plays and it really provided a huge lift for our team.” -coach Dan Salmon

THURSDAY'S GAME SUMMARY

The Marquette Redmen hosted Sault Ste. Marie in boys varsity soccer on Thursday night at the Kaufman sports complex.

Senior Max Dawson recorded yet another hat-trick for the Redmen in a 3-0 win. His first half goal was assisted by junior Ethan Sandstrom and senior Isaac Johnson. In the second half he scored twice, the first on a corner kick from senior Ezra Pickard and the second one on a pass from junior Andy Brunswick. Sophomore James Barch tended net for the Redmen and faced two shots in the first half.

“We had really windy conditions tonight and it led to some sloppy play. Definitely not a clean win but we will take it. We still have plenty to work on as we try to get better” -coach Dan Salmon
